Ask any 12th scale related question on this thread. I will try my best to explain.

Car setup, chassis, speed control settings, gearing, tires, bodies, etc...

The setup that I ran on 9/24, same exact setup and gearing that I ran in Vegas

    50 front springs
    5 degrees caster
    -0.5 degrees camber
    no toe in or out
    all shims back
    gold center spring
    blue side springs
    30,000wt in the dampener tubes
    30wt oil in the shock
    battery forward
    Magenta fronts
    Pink rear
    Black Art low downforce body

Ran a Advanced Electronics Black Diamond on profile 5
Novak SS 13.5 with about 15 degree's of timing
    geared at a 42/76

    Max,

I want to first thank you for offering your knowledge and I also want to congratulate you on your success at this year’s IIC race.

I want to pick up a 1/12 scale sometime this season and I do have some questions about the gearing. What rollout do you run? Do you gear it down for the timing advancing ESC compared to a non advancing ESC?

    Thanks,
    Mike

With my Black Diamond it has a lot of timing in it, rollout is about 2.80. For non timing speed controls you would want to rollout in the high 3's. I would have to run it to figure out what would be the best rollout. So the answer to your question would be yes, you should gear down from non timed to timed speed control settings.

Did you have any specific brand of 12th scale in mind?

    Max,

Thanks for the gearing help! I also have a question about the small side springs used in the rear (not the shock spring). What do these mainly affect? I assume they affect the roll of the rear axle?

I don’t have any brand in mind and I’m not sure which direction I will go. I normally like to run the off the wall brands that nobody else runs. I guess mainly because I think it makes things fun when there are a number of different manufactures racing. On the other hand it is nice to run the same car as the local experts because of the help they can offer.

The side springs actually affect a lot of the car. They can affect how hard the car turns, body roll in the car, and how the car reacts while in the corner. A stiffer side spring will quicken your cars response (faster through chicanes and a quicker transfer of weight), give you more steering, and possibly make the car harder to drive on low bite tracks. I would recommend when traction comes up to go to a stiffer side spring. A softer side spring will give your car less response, less steering, and will make the car easier to drive on low bite tracks (possibly settle your car down if the traction is very high). This is what I would run on Sean's track on mostly all occasions. Depends on your driving style and how you want the car to behave.

If you were to get a CRC car I would probably be able to help you out a little more on setup. Since 12th scale takes small adjustments to make them go faster. Its hard to find out what those small things are on the other cars. Just a thought. Again chassis is something that is personal preference as well.

1/12th Forum Empty Starting Tire diameter

Post  darcydawg Mon Sep 27, 2010 8:36 am

I know I've asked before, but what is a good tire diameter to start with that balances handling with long run time. I was thinking 1.67 front, 1.69 rear.

    Thanks,

For club racing I start my fronts at 1.65 and my rears at about 1.74-1.77

Carter thanks for your help last night. The car is getting better. I found out that i need to change the springs for the dampner plates.

No problem and good to hear. I think 12th scale is going to be a really good class this year.

Yes. My first 12th scale was a T-bar car. What do you need help with?

Usually that has to do with the dampening of the car. Put 10,000wt oil on the front kingpins and also on the dampener plates. Stiffening up the car will just cause it to hop even more.

    Max,

1/12 setup question. Do you “preload” the side springs at all, besides what is needed to remove any tweak in the car?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Mike,

Typically you don't want much preload on the side springs, if any at all. If you have significant preload, it's almost similar to using a stiffer spring, but stiffening up the car with the next level spring is more consistent and repeatable. On the AE car, we use very little preload and just use the springs to tweak the car.

I'd be interested to see if Max does it differently.
